Having a clear out? Urgently need to shift some household waste? Sounds like it’s time to consider hiring a skip.

While hiring a skip really is as simple as finding a local company and picking up the phone, you will need to have an idea of what type of skip you’d like. So, how do you figure out the best type of skip for you? At Cheap Skip Hire, we have years of experience providing Norfolk residents with a variety of different skips. In this article, we’ll be sharing some skip selection tips!

Read on to find out which type of skip is the best for managing household waste.

How much waste do you have?

This is the crucial question!

The deciding factor in choosing a standard-sized general waste skip or a mini skip is the quality of rubbish you need to shift. As you might have guessed, the more waste you have, the bigger your skip should be. Likewise, the less waste you have, the more suitable you’ll find a mini skip to be.

Will a mini skip be big enough?

Think a small skip will be sufficient for your needs? Let’s take a look. Our smallest skip is two yards, which is ideal for small household tidy ups (or 20 – 30 bin bags). Think you’ll need a skip with a little more capacity? Our three-yard skip could make all the difference. As it can fit 30 – 40 bin bags, a three-yard skip might be a safe bet if you’re having a more substantial clear out.

Need the details? Our two-yard skip is 2’2” feet in height, 5’ feet in length, and 4’ feet in width. To compare, our three-yard skip is 3’2” feet in height, 6’ feet in length, and 4’3” in width.

If this doesn’t sound like enough space, you might want to turn your thoughts to our standard general waste skips.

General waste skip options

If you think three yards will still be a squeeze, we’d advise getting a four-yard skip or larger. It’s always best to err on the side of caution when selecting a skip. If you end up hiring one that’s too small, you’ll just end up hiring another one — which means spending even more money on your removal project.

Our four-yard skip can accommodate 40 – 50 bin bags or a standard bathroom suite’s worth of waste. In terms of measurements, it’s 3’2” feet in height, 6’ feet in length, and 4.23’ feet in width. If you’re renovating your home one room at a time, then this size of skip should be sufficient.

If you think that this still won’t be big enough, consider a six-yard skip. These skips can hold 50 – 60 bin bags and measure 4’ feet in height, 8’6” feet in length, and 5’ feet in width.

You shouldn’t need a skip much bigger than this if you’re just disposing of household waste. While you can eight and twelve-yard skips, these tend to be used by builders or for commercial projects.
