5 Tips For Avoiding An Overloaded Skip

garden waste skip hire

Whether you’re clearing the garden or going for a full home renovation, affordable skip hire can be greatly beneficial. However, when hiring a skip, it’s important to make sure you don’t overload it. Not only can an overloaded skip cause safety hazards but it could cost you more in the long run, too.

Want to avoid this problem? Here are five handy tips to follow.

1. Hire the right size skip

One of the biggest factors in loading your skip correctly is choosing the right size in the first place. If your skip is too small, you’ll end up having to hire more than one. On the other hand, a skip that’s too large will waste money.

Make sure you check the capacity of the skip you want to hire. Will it be big enough for the amount of waste you’ll generate? If you’re planning a small house clearout, a 2 or 3-yard mini skip that can hold 20 to 30 standard bin bags of waste should be sufficient. However, if you think you’ll need more space, go for a larger skip. Try to estimate how many bags you’ll get rid of before booking your skip hire.

2. Place light items at the bottom and heavier ones on top

Putting light waste, such as cardboard or packaging, at the bottom, and heavier items like tiles on top will help to prevent any damage to the skip or its contents. The weight of the heavier items will also ensure the lighter ones are compressed, saving space.

3. Bag or secure your rubbish

Bagged waste will be easier to move and won’t take up as much space in the skip.

It’s also important to make sure that all items are securely fastened before placing them in the skip. This will help to ensure that they don’t shift during transit and cause any accidents.

4. Make sure the items are placed neatly inside

When you’re busy renovating, it can be tempting to throw things in the skip haphazardly. However, taking a bit of extra time to place waste in the skip neatly will provide you with more space. It also minimises the risk of items falling out as you add more in.

5. Don’t pile your skip too high

It might sound obvious, but if you can see that items in your skip are piled too high, don’t add more! If the rubbish looks precarious, try to carefully remove some and see if you can organise it more neatly.

If you can see that your skip is going to become too full, arrange for a second one to be delivered before the current skip reaches capacity. An overloaded skip can damage the vehicle  towing it and could cause an accident.
